Tony Thompson

Emergency Planning Society

Tony is Chair of the Emergency Planning Society, a professional body for those in the emergency management and resilience sector. Following service in the Royal Air Force, he joined the British Transport Police where as a superintendent he had command roles in many major UK rail emergencies, including train crashes at Clapham (1988), Severn Railway Tunnel (1991), Ladbroke Grove (1999), Hatfield (2000), and Great Heck (2001). Subsequent positions included leading regional resilience for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in South West England and heading up UK Emergency Response for the British Red Cross where he was engaged in providing support to the victims of the Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004), and the 7th July 2005 London bombings. He is a former member of the Police Major Disaster Advisory Team, and currently works as a consultant and trainer in emergency management in the private sector in the UK and overseas.

After Grenfell – the renewed need for emergency preparedness

The fire at Grenfell Tower has demonstrated the need for effective emergency preparedness, and the importance of planning prior to an emergency, combined with realistic training and exercising to ensure those who respond are competent in their roles.
